The Andrews Labor Government is making the drive between Colac and Camperdown safer, with major construction commencing on two new overtaking lanes on the Princes Highway at Weerite.
Minister for Roads, Road Safety and the TAC Jaala Pulford said this important upgrade would benefit communities and industries in south western Victoria.
Currently, there are only three formal overtaking opportunities on the 42-kilometre stretch of the highway between Camperdown and Colac.
These new lanes - approximately 1.5 kilometres in length each - will not only provide drivers with a safe opportunity to overtake slower drivers, they will also help improve traffic flow, ease driver frustration and provide a more reliable journey.
As an added safety measure, flexible barriers will be installed along the centreline and left-hand side to help prevent run-off collisions.
While works are underway, there will be a reduced speed limit and traffic management in place for the safety of road workers and drivers on this busy freight route. This $6.4 million project is expected to be completed by late 2020.
Additional work to rebuild the existing road surface will also take place in conjunction with this upgrade, to provide drivers with a smoother, stronger and safer journey.
