Narrandera Shire Council has welcomed a major investment that will significantly strengthen the community's resilience and critical infrastructure. The Commonwealth Government has committed $14.1 million to the Narrandera Urban Stormwater Upgrade Project - the largest allocation provided to any community under this program. With Council contributing a further $3.5 million, this essential project can now move ahead in full.
This funding represents a major win for Narrandera, coming in direct response to the severe impacts of the January 2022 storm event, when the town's ageing stormwater system was overwhelmed. With damages reaching $2.5 million, the event highlighted the need for stronger, more reliable infrastructure to protect residents, businesses, and vital services.
The upgrade will deliver a modern and robust stormwater system designed to withstand a 1% AEP (Annual Exceedance Probability) flood event. Key works include 1,250 metres of 3.6 metre box culvert, a reinforced concrete base, inlets, protection works, and a new stormwater pump station with full mechanical and electrical components. Once underway, the project is expected to span approximately 18 months to 2 years.
Mayor Neville Kschenka said the funding marks a significant and positive turning point for Narrandera.
"Strengthening our flood defences has been a major priority for Council and our community," he said.
"This investment allows us to deliver essential infrastructure that will make a real difference to the safety and resilience of Narrandera."
Council remains dedicated to working with all levels of government to deliver infrastructure that protects and enhances Narrandera for generations to come.
