Shellharbour City Council has broken ground on the Shellharbour Boathouse, marking the start of construction on a landmark marine and tourism facility at the Shell Cove Waterfront. Jointly funded by Council's contribution of over $20 million, as well as from the NSW Government, the project will build on Shellharbour's growing marine industry and tourism offering.
The Boathouse will be a purpose built marine services hub supporting both recreational and commercial boating along the NSW South Coast. Located at the entry to the Shell Cove Marina, it will deliver dry stack vessel storage, vessel hardstand and maintenance areas, and workshop facilities within a single integrated marine hub.

Once complete, the facility will provide secure vessel storage, jet washing and servicing areas, along with dedicated spaces for marine trades, retail and workshop operations. Onsite parking will improve access for operators and visitors. The project will create local jobs during construction and support long term employment in marine services and tourism once operational.
Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty says the Boathouse Shellharbour project will strengthen the region's position as a key marine and tourism destination.
"This is a strong example of how targeted investment can unlock regional economic growth while enhancing local tourism and marine capability.
"By partnering with Shellharbour City Council to deliver the purpose-built marine hub, the NSW Government is supporting infrastructure that will strengthen recreational and commercial boating in the region, create jobs, and provide long-term employment opportunities once the facility is operational," she said.
Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the Boathouse would strengthen Shellharbour as a fully equipped marine destination.
"The start of construction of the Shellharbour Boathouse is an important milestone for Shell Cove and our boating community," Mayor Homer said.
"This facility means local vessel owners will no longer need to travel outside the region for storage, maintenance or repairs. It brings essential marine services together in one place while supporting tourism, recreation and economic growth across our city."
The construction contract has been awarded to J Hutchinson Pty Ltd. Work is expected to commence in April 2026, with the facility anticipated to open to the public mid 2027.
