Motorists are now driving on a new permanent section of The Wool Road in Old Erowal Bay following the installation of 2 segments of reinforced concrete box culverts.
The recent Friday night road closure was to allow the contractor to re-direct traffic from the existing single-lane road to a portion of the new structure. Work on the remaining section of the road and culvert replacement is now under way.
Mayor Patricia White said that since the major rehabilitation works had begun, the region had received 900mm of rain, resulting in 26 working days lost to the wet weather.
"It's fantastic to see good progress being made on the removal of the old steel arch culverts and replaced with these robust concrete ones," Cr White said.
"While residents still have several weeks of single-lane access, this progress does signal an end in sight for these repairs."
"The community has been very understanding while these works have been carried out and I sincerely thank everyone for their patience when they've had to wait at the traffic lights or take the 20-minute detour."
Upcoming works include:
Demolition of existing steel arch culverts (pipe under road).
Construction of the remaining 10 metre wide x 2.1 metre reinforced concrete box. culverts and base slab.
Construction of culvert headwalls.
Reinstatement of road pavement and asphalt.
Reinstatement of guard rail and line marking.
These works are in response to severe damage sustained in 2024 to the section of road between Macgibbon Parade and Birriga Avenue, after extreme rainfall caused a sink hole. Repair works are funded jointly by the Australian and NSW Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, plus a contribution from Council.
Works are currently scheduled to be completed by mid-December 2025, weather permitting.
