Major Upgrade At Bruns Sports Fields Gets Underway

Toilets at Stan Thompson Oval

People who use the sports fields at Brunswick Heads will notice some building action, with Council beginning repairs of the public toilets and the club house at Stan Thompson Oval this month.

Malcolm Robertson, Manager Open Spaces and Facilities, said that the current public amenities are in poor condition and need to be repaired and replaced due to age and structural issues.

"Current facilities are not meeting the needs of players and supporters, and we know these upgrades will be welcomed," said Mr Robertson.

"We have begun work and hope to complete the first stage of the project by the end of April. We appreciate that during construction there will be impacts to access for local sporting clubs, but we are trying to minimise any impacts wherever possible," Mr Robertson added.

The first stage of work is funded by Council and includes:

  • Repair and reconfiguration of all public toilets.
  • Structural repairs and replacement of the ground floor and walls of the amenities block.
  • A new access ramp and landings to all public toilets to increase accessibility.
  • A new accessible concrete path connecting the playground to the club house and accessible car space.
  • New outdoor stairs for access to the upper level of the club house onto the deck.

"The second stage of the project will include improvements to changing rooms and showers including an accessible bathroom, and an internal staircase and accessible lift. It will also include removal of an existing non-compliant staircase and other external improvements to the existing building. At this stage we are unsure when we will be able to complete the second stage, as it will require grant funding," said Mr Robertson.
