The ACT Government is building four new health centres across Canberra to bring quality health care closer to home.
The new health centres - in South Tuggeranong, North Gungahlin, the Inner South and West Belconnen - will complement the existing community health centres and nurse-led Walk-In-Centres already open in Canberra.
Construction is progressing well on the South Tuggeranong Health Centre, located at the corner of Box Hill Avenue and Heidelberg Street, Condor.
With the scaffolding now removed, the building's brickwork, glazing and detailing are clearly emerging, while the internal spaces continue to progress as services and walls are installed.
The health centre was designed with input from clinicians and the local community to ensure it meets their needs.
It will feature 11 consultation rooms and a flexible layout to support the delivery of services, including paediatrics, pathology collection, dementia care, diabetes clinics, falls and falls injury prevention, chronic disease programs and a virtual care room.
Construction will be complete in mid 2026 and the centre is expected to open later this year.
The Inner South Health Centre is proposed for a block just off Throsby Crescent, Griffith, behind the Griffith Shops.
Late last month, the Inner South Health Centre was declared a Territory Priority Project by the Chief Minister and the Minister for Planning and Sustainable Development.
This process is designed to expedite the development of this significant health infrastructure and facilities that are needed in thecommunity.
Services proposed to be offered at the Inner South Health Centre include dental and oral health care, pathology collection, post-acute care management, rapid access clinics and chronic disease management.
The Inner South community will soon be further consulted on detailed design as part of the development application process.
Design work is also underway for the North Gungahlin Health Centre which will be located along Kingsland Parade in Casey, close to public transport and Casey Market Town.
The centre will support a variety of health services, have spaces designed for group and individual care and also include spaces for community organisations.
Planning for the West Belconnen Health Centre is at an early stage, and the ACT Government is reviewing potential sites.
Community consultation will begin once a location is chosen.
Quotes attributable to Minister for Health, Rachel Stephen-Smith MLA:
"The Government is committed to making healthcare easier to access for Canberrans, no matter where they live.
"These four new health centres will allow patients to receive treatment from skilled nurses, allied health professionals and specialists, working in partnership with their GP to keep them well in the community.
"Delivering coordinated care closer to home means issues are less likely to escalate to the point where people need to present at an Emergency Department or be admitted to hospital, which is a win-win for consumers and the busy hospital system.
"I am looking forward to seeing the completion of the South Tuggeranong Health Centre later this year, and the progress of the remaining three centres."
