Tasmania's defence industry is turning heads in Malaysia as part of the Tasmanian Government's latest international trade mission.
A highlight of the Malaysia and Thailand mission to promote Tasmania's defence and advanced manufacturing industries has been our participation in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition in Malaysia.
Representing the Tasmanian Government, Minister for Hospitality and Small Business, Jane Howlett, said the award-winning Pivot Maritime was one of three Tasmanian manufacturers supported to attend the exhibition, to help grow their share of the region's defence market.
"The trade mission is already delivering results with Pivot Maritime signing a new Memorandum of Understanding with Malaysian defence contractor AR Eastern to pursue significant projects for the Royal Malaysian Navy," Minister Howlett said.
"Pivot Maritime, Australia's only designer and manufacturer of maritime simulators, is already supplying navies and civilian operations around the world, including world-first large-scale container simulators for the Royal Australian Navy in Darwin.
"Trade shows deliver tangible results, with Tasmania's attendance already generating sales enquiries and providing valuable connections in Malaysia, including the Maritime University of Malaysia and representatives from Southern and South East Asia.
"Tasmania's Lightning Protection International and Novaris have a strong presence in the South East Asia market and attracted significant attention from potential buyers for their state-of-the-art lightening protection systems.
"The mission was also an opportunity to promote Tasmania's capabilities across advanced manufacturing and defence, science, technology, agribusiness, mining, minerals, energy and tourism.
"We were particularly pleased to strengthen our relationship with officials from Selangor, the single largest economic centre in Malaysia.
"As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we are backing in business to keep our economy strong and create local jobs."
