The Geelong Laneways: Malop Arcade project has been awarded the 2025 Australian Institute of Architects National Award for Small Project Architecture, recognising the innovative transformation of central Geelong laneways.
The project extended Dennys Place from Malop Street to Little Malop Street via a breakthrough, creating a green and vibrant public laneway delivered as part of the Revitalising Central Geelong Partnership; a partnership between State Government, City of Greater Geelong and the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Corporation.
As a result of the project, important city destinations have been linked, and previously private spaces have been activated as public laneways and gardens, integrating greenery, stormwater management, and improved pedestrian access to support local businesses and enhance public life.
A number of key design, consulting, and construction offices were also credited for the project:
- NMBW Architecture Studio – Lead Architecture
- ASPECT Studios – Landscape Design
- Rendine Constructions Pty Ltd – Builder
- Akt. Project Management – Project Manager
- FMG Engineering – Structural Engineer
- WSP – Civil & Electrical Consultant
- ZINC Cost Management – Quantity Surveyor
- BSA Building Surveyors – Building Surveyor
The success of the project is now driving similar results through the Market Street Breakthrough project, which is another partnership between the Victorian Government and the City.Nearing completion, it will further transform central Geelong laneways into vibrant, green public spaces connecting Market Street lane through to Ryrie Street.
Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM:
The Geelong Laneways: Malop Arcade project has been a huge success, and we can see that with the number of people who pass through the area every day, linking areas that were previously divided. It's great to see the 2025 Australian Institute of Architects National Awards highlighting that our city is home to architecture that is recognised on the national stage.
Councillor Ron Nelson, Deputy Chair of the CBD Revitalisation portfolio:
This was a really solid outcome as a direct result of a partnership between the City and the Victorian Government. We are very excited for the Market Street Breakthrough project to be completed, and to see our city's connectivity and revitalisation continued further.
