Man arrested following armed robbery and carjackings

Police have arrested a man in Werribee this morning following a series of incidents in Melbourne’s northwest over the past day, Victoria Police say.

It is alleged a man armed with a knife attended a service station on Horsburgh Drive, Altona North just before 3.30am yesterday morning (29 September) and fled with cigarettes.

The same man is alleged to have been involved in an aggravated carjacking on Raleigh Street, Essendon about 11.15am that morning, where a Subaru was stolen.

No one was injured during the incident and the 34-year-old victim’s car has since been recovered.

About 1pm, a second aggravated carjacking is alleged to have taken place outside a fast food restaurant on the Western Highway, Burnside.

It is alleged a man armed with a knife demanded the 62-year-old victim’s possessions before fleeing in his Holden Cruze.

That vehicle is yet to be located.

About 12am this morning (30 September), police were called to reports of a man armed with a knife at an address on Lyall Street, Werribee.

The man barricaded himself in the home and was arrested by members from the Critical Incident Response Team a short time later.

A conducted energy device was used during the arrest, with the 40-year-old Melton man taken to hospital under police guard for assessment.

No one else was inside the property at the time.

The man is expected to be charged later this morning with 17 offences, including two counts of aggravated carjacking, armed robbery, obtain property by deception, commit indictable offence while on bail, assault police and driving-related matters.

He is expected to be direct presented to Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
