Man arrested or Breach of Emergency Management Act

A 37-year-old man has been arrested, charged and refused bail after failing to comply with the emergency management quarantine directions upon arriving in Western Australia.

The Vietnamese National is a crew member aboard a bulk carrier ship that berthed at the Albany Port on 7 January 2021. Crew members are not permitted ashore onto WA land.

It is alleged the 37-year-old man jumped into the water on Saturday, 9 January 2021 and swam ashore in contravention of the Controlled Border for Western Australia Directions and the Maritime Crew Directions.

He was located by police the just before 7pm on Saturday, 9 January 2021 at an Albany backpackers accommodation site.

The man was subject to a health risk assessment and underwent a rapid test for COVID-19 which has provided a negative result.

He has been charged with Failed to Comply with a Direction and is due to appear via video-link before the Perth Magistrates Court today, 10 January 2021.
