Man arrested re mobile traffic camera incident in Altona

Police have arrested a 53-year-old South Kingsville man this morning following an investigation into alleged damage to a mobile traffic camera vehicle and threats made to the operator.

Detectives from the Hobsons Bay Crime Investigation Unit this morning executed a search warrant at a property on Blackshaws Road in South Kingsville.

The man was arrested a short time later at an address in Maidstone Street, Altona.

The South Kingsville man has been charged in relation to his alleged involvement in three separate incidents, one occurring on 4 December 2022, and the other two occurring on 25 January.

In the first incident on 4 December, the man allegedly approached the mobile traffic camera on Blackshaws Road in South Kingsville and proceeded to splash white paint over the car.

In the second incident, the man allegedly was on a bike and approached the vehicle parked on Civic Parade in Altona on 25 January, where he became verbally aggressive towards the operator, spitting on the window and proceeded to punch the driver's side mirror.

It's alleged the man then returned an hour later and splashed white paint over the vehicle and threatened the operator with a tomahawk.

The South Kingsville man has been charged with criminal damage, abuse road safety camera operator, threaten road safety camera operator, threat to inflict serious injury, possess dangerous article and other offences.

He is expected to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.
