Man Charged: Camera Assault, Attempted Arson in Bankstown

A man will face court today over an alleged assault with a camera and attempted arson attack on a home in Sydney's southwest yesterday.

About 1am (Tuesday 2 June 2026), officers attached to Bankstown Police Area Command were called to a home in Wellington Road, Birrong, following reports a man had been allegedly assaulted.

On arrival, police found that a 50-year-old man had allegedly been assaulted by a 22-year-old man, before the younger man damaged the home by removing two CCTV cameras and assaulting the older man with one of the devices.

Police were further told the 22-year-old man allegedly went to a nearby car before returning with a jerry can and pouring accelerant on the front of the home and attempting to ignite the property.

The 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Bankstown Police Station.

The 50-year-old man was assessed at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for facial injuries, however, did not require further treatment.

The 22-year-old was charged with two counts of stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm, assault causing actual bodily harm, destroy or damage property and attempt damage property by fire/explosion more than $15,000.

He was refused bail to appear before Bankstown Local Court today (Wednesday 3 June 2026).
