Man charged following protest in Newcastle

A man will face court following an unauthorised protest at Sandgate this morning, NSW Police say.

About 6.20am (Thursday 13 September 2018), police were called to the Hunter River Rail Crossover following reports a man was protesting on the train tracks.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District, with assistance from Police Rescue, attended and arrested a 38-year-old man.

He was taken to Waratah Police Station where he was charged with enter inclosed lands without lawful excuse, cause/attempt to cause train in motion to be stopped, and cause obstruction to railway locomotive or rolling stock.

The man was granted conditional bail and will appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 4 October 2018.
