Man Charged for Impersonating Police at Lake Illawarra

A man has been charged with impersonating a police officer in the Illawarra, last month, after allegedly pulling over two vehicles in the space of an hour.

Police will allege about 10.30pm on Wednesday 14 January 2026, an 18-year-old female driver was pulled over on the Primbee Bypass, Primbee by a man driving a grey Mitsubishi with red and blue flashing lights.

The man who was plain clothed, allegedly asked the driver for her license, before taking her phone back to his vehicle and told her he was giving her a warning for speeding.

The woman left the scene and reported the matter to Lake Illawarra Police.

Police will allege 30 minutes later, the man driving a vehicle with blue and red flashing light pulled over a 21-year-old male driver on Cove Boulevarde, Shell Cove.

After he allegedly demanded the driver hand over his license and registration, the driver left the scene and contacted triple zero.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District commenced inquiries.

About 9.30am yesterday (Thursday 12 February 2026), police attended a home in Shiraz Drive, Dapto and arrested an 18-year-old man.

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with two counts of Impersonate Police Officer and exercise powers/functions.

He was granted bail to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday 18 March 2026.
