A man will face court today charged following an alleged shooting near Newcastle in October.
About 11.50pm on Sunday 5 October 2025, emergency services were called to a unit on Elizabeth Street, Mayfield, following reports of a shooting.
Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District attended and found a woman suffering a gunshot wound to her leg.
The 19-year-old woman was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Police established a crime scene and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
About 9.25am yesterday (Thursday 11 December 2025), police attended a unit on Cecil Avenue, Waratah, to execute a search warrant.
Attending officers attempted to engage with a man at the address, who barricaded himself within the unit.
A perimeter was established by specialist officers including police negotiators and officers attached to the Tactical Operations Unit and Tactical Operations Regional Support.
About 10.05am, the 29-year-old man exited the unit allegedly armed with a knife and a short time later was arrested after a Taser and bean bag rounds were deployed.
The man was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Waratah Police Station.
Three dogs were subsequently seized by council rangers after they also emerged from the unit and attacked both a police officer and a police dog.
During a search of the man's bag and the unit, police allegedly located and seized several items of interest including electronics, and 2g of methamphetamine.
An outstanding warrant was executed, and the man was charged with six offences,
- Armed with intent commit indictable offence
- Reckless grievous bodily harm (DV)
- Acquire etc firearm - subject to prohibition order
- Possess unauthorised prohibited firearm
- Possess prohibited drug, and
- Affray.
He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 today (Friday 12 December 2025).
