Man Charged with Fraud and Assault at Sydney Airport

A Canberra man who allegedly assaulted two people at Sydney Airport after he was stopped from boarding a flight is scheduled to face Sydney Downing Centre Local Court today (14 April 2023).

AFP Sydney Airport officers arrested the man, 19, in a domestic departure lounge on 12 April after the man allegedly acted aggressively when attempting to board a flight to Canberra.

The man was blocked from the flight as his ticket was allegedly purchased using stolen credit card details, triggering its cancellation after the airline and bank flagged suspected fraudulent activity.

The man allegedly attempted to assault a staff member when he was stopped from boarding the flight before allegedly assaulting a passenger who intervened.

The man was taken to Mascot Police station where he was charged with:

  • Two counts of common assault, contrary to section 61 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW);
  • One count of obtaining financial advantage by deception contrary to section 192D of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW)

The maximum penalty for these offences is two and ten years' imprisonment respectively.

AFP Sydney Airport Police Commander Morgen Blunden said the AFP would not tolerate violent behaviour at airports.

"The AFP works very hard to ensure our airports are a safe environment for travellers and staff," Detective Superintendent Morgen Blunden said.

"The AFP has zero tolerance for violence and will prosecute people to the full extent of the law if they pose a threat to people's safety."
