Man dies after serious assault at Tweed Heads

A man has died in hospital following a serious assault on the state's Far North Coast last week.

About 6pm on Wednesday 15 May 2019, a group of people were at a unit on Kennedy Drive, Tweed Heads West, when a physical altercation occurred between two men – aged 54 and 47 – who are known to each other.

Police will allege the younger man assaulted the older man several times.

Emergency services attended and the injured man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition; however, he died last night (Wednesday 22 May 2019).

A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The 47-year-old man, who was arrested at the scene shortly after the alleged assault, was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday 27 May 2019.

Detectives from Tweed/Byron Police District, with the assistance of the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, are continuing to investigate the incident under Strike Force Ypres.

As part of their inquiries, the current charges will be reviewed.
