Man dies while swimming at Shellharbour

A man has drowned on the state's south coast this afternoon.

About 1.15pm today (Wednesday 9 February 2022), emergency services were called to Shellharbour Beach, following reports a man was experiencing difficulties in the water.

The 36-year-old man was in the water with two other men when he was seen to go beneath the surface and not emerge.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District co-ordinated a large-scale search involving NSW Water Police, Marine Rescue, Surf Lifesaving, Westpac Life Saver Helicopter, Toll Ambulance Helicopter and NSW Ambulance paramedics.

The man was retrieved from the water about 5.10pm but could not be revived.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
