NSW detectives have extradited a man from Tasmania following investigations into the alleged sexual abuse of a young girl in the state's south more than seven years ago.
In 2016, officers attached to the State Crime Command's Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation after receiving a report of alleged child sexual abuse.
Following extensive inquiries, detectives attached to the Murray Child Abuse Unit obtained an arrest warrant for a 29-year-old man living in Tasmania.
He was arrested with the assistance of Tasmania Police outside a correctional centre in Risdon, Tasmania, about 8am yesterday (Wednesday 6 April 2022).
NSW Police subsequently applied for and were granted his extradition to NSW.
He was escorted by detectives on a flight to Sydney and taken to Mascot Police Station, where he was charged with aggravated sexual intercourse person above 10 and less than 14 years of age.
Police will allege in court the man sexually abused a young girl who was known to him in Albury in December 2015.
The man, who has been remanded in custody in Victoria and Tasmania since 2016, was refused bail to appear at Central Local Court today (Thursday 7 April 2022).
The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
