Man extradited over historical sexual assault and robbery in Griffith

Police have successfully applied for the extradition of a Tasmanian man in relation to the sexual assault and robbery of a woman at Griffith more than 20 years ago, NSW Police say.

A 21-year-old woman was walking home from a local hotel in the early hours of 19 February 1994 when she was approached from behind by a man at the Griffith railway yards.

The woman was sexually assaulted a number of times, assaulted and robbed, before the man left the scene.

The woman suffered a number of injuries, including broken ribs.

Late last year, police from Griffith Local Area Command were granted an arrest warrant for a Tasmanian man.

They travelled to Hobart this week where they sought and were granted the man's extradition in a Tasmanian court.

The man, who is now 43, is expected to appear at Central Local Court tomorrow charged with a number of offences relating to the incident.
