A Milsons Point man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court yesterday over an alleged theft from the luggage carousel at Sydney Domestic Airport.
On Monday morning (9 March), a 27-year-old man allegedly opened a backpack from the baggage carousel in the domestic terminal and removed a number of personal items, including a watch and a diary.
The man was later observed by a witness in the terminal allegedly removing a small suitcase from the carousel and leaving the terminal.
AFP officers were alerted to the man, and attended the terminal and located the man in the carpark. Police allege the man was attempting to access a hire car which he had not paid for when he was located.
The man was arrested at the scene and was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with two counts of larceny, contrary to the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW).
He was refused police bail overnight and appeared before Sydney Central Local Court yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 10 March) where he was remanded in custody. He is next due to appear in Court on Wednesday 15 April 2020.
AFP Sydney Airport Police Commander, Superintendent Peter Mullins, said the arrest is a reminder of vigilant police presence at the airport.
"The AFP's airport policing teams are at Sydney Airport at all hours, working closely with the public and our partners to detect, deter and prosecute crimes at Australia's largest air gateway," Superintendent Mullins said.
The investigation is continuing into other related matters and further charges have not been ruled out.
AFP officers have since located the owner of the personal items and returned them to a Swedish traveller, while the owner of the suitcase has also been contacted.
