Man in critical condition following serious motor vehicle crash at Lyell Highway, Sorell Creek

A 28 year old Glenorchy man is in a critical condition following a four car crash on the Lyell Highway at Sorell Creek this morning. Approximately 10:25 am on Sunday the 17th of February 2019 police attended a report of the crash. The driver of a Hobart bound green Nissan Pulsar has failed to negotiate a left hand corner, colliding with a Toyota Hilux utility which was travelling towards New Norfolk. This has caused the utility to veer off the road and into a shallow waterway. The Pulsar has continued on to collide with two other oncoming vehicles, a silver Toyota Camry station wagon and red Mitsubishi ASX station wagon.

As a result of the crash, the driver of the Nissan Pulsar had be cut free from the vehicle by SES crews and is currently undergoing surgery at the Royal Hobart Hospital. He is listed as being in a critical condition.

The 27 year old Howrah man driving the Toyota utlity was transported to hospital with a suspected shoulder injury. The 22 year old New Norfolk man driving the Toyota Camry was uninjured. The 60 year old male driver of the Mitsubishi ASX, who is from the United Kingdom, and his wife were transported to hospital and remain there for observations.

All drivers submitted to blood testing for alcohol and drugs.

The Lyell Highway between Granton and New Norfolk was closed for 5 hours to allow forensics and crash investigation services to examine and survey the scene, and to allow for the vehicles to be removed. Investigations are continuing at this time.

Police would like to speak with anyone who saw a green Nissan Pulsar driving between New Norfolk and Sorell Creek prior to the crash.
