Man injured in police shootng - Werribee

A man has been injured during a police shooting in Werribee last night.

Police attended a Sanderling Street address to reports of a woman being assaulted about 10pm.

When officers arrived, the female victim had safely left the address however the male occupant refused to leave the home.

Critical Incident Response Team members were attempting to negotiate with the man when he allegedly exited the house armed with a knife.

Police attempted to subdue the man using a taser and beanbag rounds however were unsuccessful in stopping his advance.

An officer discharged their firearm, shooting the man in the lower body about 11.20pm.

The 55-year-old was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The 59-year-old female victim and another woman in the house at the time of the incident were not injured.

Armed Crime Squad detectives will investigate the incident which will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command, as per standard protocol when a police firearm is discharged.
