Manangatang P-12 Students Launch Their First-ever School Dance

Swan Hill Rural City Council's YouthInc team are thrilled to be supporting Manangatang P-12 College with their first-ever school dance - The Op Shop Ball - a night created by students, for students.

The event will be held on Friday 24 October from 7–10pm at the Manangatang Town Hall, 75 Wattle Street.

Council's Youth Coordinator, Will Burns said the event was planned and coordinated by students in the Growing Communities class.

"The Op Shop Ball is designed to celebrate fun, friendship, and community. Year 7–12 students from Manangatang P-12, Ouyen P-12, Tyrrell College, Robinvale College, and Tooleybuc College are invited to come together for an unforgettable evening.

"A DJ will keep the dance floor alive all night long, while the "Op Shop Chic" theme encourages students to show off their best second-hand style - or simply wear whatever makes them feel great. A photo booth with dress-ups will capture plenty of laughs and memories, and with prizes, food, and non-stop dancing, the night promises to be one to remember," Mr Burns said.

Student organisers said they wanted to create something inclusive and student-driven:

"It's basically a chance to dress up, dance, and hang out with friends in a fun, inclusive way. We wanted something that feels like it's ours, and we're pumped to have other schools come and be part of it," they said.

Principal Linda Connell said she was proud of the students' creativity and initiative.

"Our students have shown real leadership and imagination. The Op Shop Ball is their idea, and it's wonderful to see them bringing young people and communities together in such a positive way," Ms Connell said.

If successful, students hope The Op Shop Ball will become the start of a new regional tradition - with other schools hosting future dances to help strengthen friendships across the district.

Tickets are $10 and available from school offices.
