Smoother, safer journeys are one step closer at Mooroolbark and Lilydale with the removal of the Manchester Road and Maroondah Highway boom gates over the weekend.
These level crossings are some of the worst in Melbourne's east, causing delays to the 53,000 vehicles that pass through the area daily.

The boom gate removals were part of a 45-day construction blitz on the Lilydale line, which kicked off on Friday 10 September. A crew of over 650 workers will continue works to complete the rail bridge and get the new Mooroolbark and Lilydale stations ready for passengers.
On Monday 25 October, the brand new stations will open months ahead of schedule. The new stations will boast modern facilities including lighting, CCTV and improved disability access. It will also produce 45% less carbon and use 70% less water.
We are also doubling parking at Moroolbark station by building a new multi-level carpark as part of the Victorian Government's Carparks for Commuters Program. The carpark will be complete in 2022.
During this time, there will be changes to how you travel around Mooroolbark and Lilydale.
You can still travel through the area. We encourage you to plan ahead, and travel in non-peak times when possible.
