Manslaughter Charges Filed in Coolac Crash

A man has been charged with two additional offences, including manslaughter, following a serious truck crash on the Hume Highway in the state's south, last year.

About 1.45am on Friday 3 January 2025, emergency services were called to the Hume Highway, near Spring Dam Road, Coolac, 18km north of Gundagai, following reports of a multi-vehicle crash.

Officers attached to The Hume and Riverina Police Districts attended the scene and found that four trucks had collided.

One driver - a 22-year-old man - died at the scene, while three other drivers were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Police established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.

Following an investigation by the Riverina Crash Investigation Unit, police arrested a 52-year-old man at Tarcutta, on Friday 11 April 2025.

He was taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station where he was charged with five offences - dangerous driving occasioning death - drive manner dangerous, dangerous driving occasioning death - driver under influence, negligent driving occasioning death and two counts of possess prohibited drug.

The man's driving licence was suspended.

Following further legal advice, today ( Wednesday 4 March 2026) in Wagga Wagga Local Court, police laid two additional charges of manslaughter and cause bodily harm by misconduct.

The now 53-year-old was refused bail and will next appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court on Wednesday 6 May 2026.
