As stated by Counties Manukau District Commander, Superintendent Shanan Gray:
One person has died following a fatal crash in Manurewa last night.
A critical incident investigation is now underway, which will establish the full circumstances of what unfolded.
At about 9.36pm Police were called to an address on Greenmeadows Ave following a report of an aggravated robbery.
An alleged offender was believed to have stolen a vehicle from the property, after presenting a crowbar at the occupant.
As Police units approached the area they observed a vehicle being driven in the middle of the road, without headlights.
Enquiries later confirmed the vehicle was the one stolen from Greenmeadows Ave.
Police signalled for the vehicle to stop; however, it failed to do so and took off at speed.
Around 9.42pm the vehicle has travelled onto Alfriston Road, where it has collided head on with a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.
Officers immediately rendered first aid; however, the driver and sole occupant of the stolen vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The occupant of the second vehicle was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
A scene examination has been completed by the Serious Crash Unit, and the road has since reopened.
There are several investigations now underway, which will work to establish all the facts surrounding this tragic incident.
This includes notifying the Independent Police Conduct Authority, as is standard procedure.
We are also working to support those affected and their families, as well as our staff who were involved.
All those involved in the initial report of aggravated robbery are believed to be known to each other, and there is no ongoing risk to the public.
As part of our investigation, we are seeking information from witnesses who may have been in the area at the time, or prior to this incident occurring.
