Maradiaga to UN: Ortega's Repression Crosses Borders

UN Watch

Mr. President, Council members.
Nicaragua is experiencing a human rights crisis that transcends its border.

We see how Ortega and his circle exercise transnational repression. They threaten and harass exiled people through immigration tools and persecution in exile.

In Costa Rica, thousands of opponents are at risk. I lament that on June 19, opposition leader Roberto Sancan was murdered in San Jose.

According to the authorities themselves, the suspect fits the profile of a hit man with political motivation. This requires an exhaustive investigation, independent, international cooperation and protection measures for Nicaraguans in exile.

The persecution of the Catholic Church and many Protestant churches continues, including restrictions on worship, harassment and criminalization of pastoral assistance.

The right to return is also restricted. Thousands were stripped of their nationality to prevent them from returning.

Also worrying is the narrowing of ties with Russia, with China, with Iran and other autocracies, aggravating the repression.

So, I ask you:

Strengthen the mechanism on Nicaragua, especially support the excellent work of the Group of Experts.

Demand the end of repression.

Restore the nationalities and right to return and coordinate with UNHCR and the Host States to protect those in Costa Rica, with special attention to high-risk cases.

Thank you very much.
