Two men have been rescued after their vessel capsized off the coast of Garden Island on Tuesday, 16 September 2025.
At approximately 10:15am, a mayday call was received over marine radio channel VHF16, reporting a vessel in distress. Shortly after, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra alerted authorities to an EPIRB activation in the same area.
Water Police coordinated the deployment of air and sea assets, including the AMSA Challenger jet, RAC Rescue Helicopter, Police Air Wing, and local marine rescue vessels.
A nearby commercial fishing vessel was first on scene and located the overturned aluminium runabout. Two men were found sitting on the upturned hull, both wearing lifejackets.
They were safely brought aboard the fishing vessel and transported back to shore.
The pair were met at Point Peron by St John WA paramedics and taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital for medical assessment.
As summer approaches, authorities are reminding all boaters to ensure they are properly prepared - with the right safety equipment, including lifejackets, an EPIRB, and a working marine radio - before heading out on the water.
