Maulen Ashimbayev: Kazakhstan Has Decisively And Irreversibly Embarked On Path Of Democratic Transformation

CoE/Parliamentary Assembly

"Kazakhstan has decisively and irreversibly embarked on the path of democratic transformation," Maulen Ashimbayev, Chairman of the Senate of Kazakhstan, today said, addressing the Assembly in the framework of a debate on its support for democratic reforms in the country.

"Democratic reform is a complex and lengthy process and challenges remain. But we are determined and will continue along this path," he added.

"Today, democratic institutions and values are under increasing attack worldwide and certain forces seek to question the effectiveness of democratic systems. In these circumstances, Kazakhstan has clearly defined its long-term development priorities: the rule of law, the protection of human rights, the creation of an inclusive society and the democratisation of governance through transparent procedures and a system of checks and balances," Mr Ashimbayev added.

"Therefore, we believe that our priorities and values largely converge. This provides a strong foundation for long-term and fruitful co-operation between Kazakhstan and the countries of Europe," he concluded.
