Kiama Mayor Cameron McDonald welcomed 24 of Australia's newest citizens at a ceremony at The Pavilion Kiama on Monday.
Joy filled the room as family and friends gathered to view the citizenship ceremony as Mayor McDonald and State Member for Kiama Katelin McInerney fulfilled the official duties required.
Mayor McDonald signed the Australian Citizenship Pledge Verification document while Ms McInerney acted on behalf of Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Tony Burke in reading out the official message of welcome to the new citizens.
"Congratulations to our newest Australians on their decision to become an Australian citizen, a decision welcomed not only by me, but by all Australians," Mayor McDonald said.
"The citizenship ceremony is one of the most pleasurable roles a Mayor gets to do. To see the commitment and pleasure of those taking part was a humbling experience.
"Citizenship is a common bond which unites all Australians, whether they are Australia's traditional inhabitants, first generation migrants or the descendants of earlier settlers. Our rich heritage stems from the contributions made by all of us."
Ms McInerney said she was honoured to be part of such a special ceremony with each new citizen receiving gifts, including their framed certificate and a native plant.
"Thanks to the Kiama Council team for putting together such a heartwarming event and for the gifts each participant received to mark their citizenship confirmation," she said.
"Every new citizen, whether they've been part of our community for decades or recently moved here, adds to our community's story and the diversity they bring is our strength and should be celebrated."
Renowned Kiama singer Penny Hartgerink performed at the event, leading a stirring rendition of the national anthem for the new citizens.
