McGowan Labor Government contributes $1.5 million to construct new WA Indian Community Centre

  • New building to be constructed on site secured through a Lotterywest grant
  • Indian Society of WA to lead development of the centre, with every Indian community group in WA able to use facility
  • The McGowan Labor Government will contribute $1.5 million to the construction of a new WA Indian Community Centre in Willetton to benefit the Indian community in Western Australia.

The Indian Society of Western Australia (ISWA), the peak body for WA's Indian communities, will lead the development of the centre, with every Indian community group in WA able to make use of the facility.

The site for the new centre was secured by ISWA last year, with support from the State Government through a Lotterywest grant.

The Multipurpose Indian Community Centre will be used for events, festivals and activities including education programs, day care for the aged, as well as providing a dedicated space for locals with Indian heritage to come together and celebrate their culture and traditions.

ISWA has also secured Federal funding grants to help complete the project.

The Indian community is one of the largest multicultural communities in Western Australia and one of the fastest growing.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

"The Indian community in Western Australia is vibrant, hard-working, and makes a fantastic contribution to society.

"After attending recent Diwali celebrations, it is clear that this WA community is growing.

"Today's announcement of funding from the State Government will ensure that they will soon have a dedicated community centre to host events, festivals and education programs.

"I'm excited to see this project progress to completion, and look forward to attending events in the coming years."
