A man remains in hospital under police guard following a fatal crash in Beaumaris overnight.
Emergency services were called, after a white Volkswagen sedan crashed onto the Bay Trail from Beach Road about 12.30am.
Sadly, one of the passengers, a 38-year-old man from Blind Bight, died at the scene.
The other passenger, a 45-year-old man from Carrum Downs, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The driver, a 23-year-old man from Carrum Downs, was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives will investigate the incident and urge anyone who was driving in the area at the time to check their dashcam.
