Construction is now underway on a new high school for Melrose Park, plus the redevelopment of Melrose Park Public School, including a new public preschool, as part of the Minns Labor Government's work to rebuild public education and address enrolment demand in Western Sydney.
Part of a record $9 billion investment in school infrastructure in the 2025-26 Budget, the new high school will open on Day 1, Term 1, 2027 for up to 560 students, and has been masterplanned to accommodate up to 1,000 students in future.
The high school will have world-class facilities including 31 modern classrooms, 3 support classrooms, a school hall, sports court and library.
The Minns Labor Government is also delivering the redevelopment of Melrose Park Public School, which will grow five times its current capacity with the addition of 35 new permanent classrooms, including 3 support classrooms, making way for the removal of all demountables.
The redeveloped school will accommodate more than 700 students when it opens on Day 1 Term 1 2027.
In addition to replacing all demountables at Melrose Park Public School with permanent classrooms, the redeveloped school will have a new library, school hall, covered outdoor learning area, and sports court, plus a co-located public preschool with fee-free places for up to 120 children per week.
The new public preschool at Melrose Park Public School is part of the Minns Labor Government's $769 million commitment to build 100 public preschools by 2027, the biggest expansion of public preschools in the state's history.
The new high school and redeveloped public school for Melrose Park are among 16 new schools and major upgrade projects now underway across the greater Parramatta area. Once completed this work will see more than 200 demountables removed from schools in the Parramatta area and replaced with more than 300 permanent classrooms.
The Minns Labor Government's record $9 billion school infrastructure Budget for 2025-26 includes $3.9 billion for new and upgraded schools across Western Sydney, where more than two-thirds of the demountables now clogging up playgrounds were put there by the Liberals and Nationals during more than a decade of neglect.
As well as building classrooms where they are needed, the Minns Labor Government's work to rebuild public education includes ensuring each classroom has a qualified teacher.
Since March 2023, the Minns Labor Government has reduced teacher vacancies by 61 per cent across the state, leading to the number of cancelled classes recorded in NSW nearly halving.
Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning and Western Sydney Courtney Houssos said:
"The Minns Labor Government is rebuilding public education across Western Sydney, delivering permanent classrooms so every child can access a world class education close to home.
"Demountables should only be a temporary stop-gap measure, but during 12 years of neglect by the former Liberal and National government, they became a permanent fixture at far too many Western Sydney schools.
"With the leadership of Deputy Premier and Education Minister Prue Car we are building the new and upgraded schools where they are needed, removing demountables and restoring playground space so that children in every suburb get the education they deserve."
NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said:
"We are investing to build and upgrade the schools that growing communities in Western Sydney have been crying out for.
"At the same time, we're investing in the teachers who provide high-quality public education to students across the state.
"The Minns Labor Government is cleaning up the mess left by the former Liberal National Government - who put teachers under a wages cap, and students in temporary buildings for too long."
Member for Parramatta Donna Davis said:
"I'm proud the Minns Labor Government is delivering for local families, ensuring better schools and more teachers to give our kids the high-quality education they deserve, close to home.
"More than two-thirds of the demountables of school site in Parramatta were put there by the former Liberal-National Government - my community deserved better.
"This rapidly growing community will soon benefit from this important new high school and preschool, and a redeveloped public school right on their doorstep. I can't wait to see the finished result."
Federal Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale said:
"Melrose Park is one of the fastest-growing parts of Bennelong, and families here have been waiting almost 12 years for the schools they deserve.
"This investment will mean children can start in a brand-new preschool, move through a redeveloped public primary school, and go on to a new high school, all close to home. That's transformational for local families.
"This massive commitment by the Minns Labor Government is a gamechanger for the local community. Fast tracking schools, and planning for the future is proof Labor Governments at a State and Federal level are committed to meeting the needs of this growing community."
Melrose Park Public School Principal Nicole Doig said:
"I am thrilled that our school will be completely redeveloped with such amazing facilities. Together with the new preschool and the high school next door, we are building a very strong public education presence in Melrose Park for decades to come.
"With new facilities from preschool to Year 12, we will also be able to really support the transition and continuity of learning for all students throughout their learning journey."
