Men's Shed, ACTSES Join Forces for Flood Safety

The ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) has designed an innovative 'Flood Table' to help Canberrans better understand and prepare for flood risks.

The Flood Table is an interactive tool designed by the ACTSES and funded through the Australian Government's NEMA Disaster Ready Fund (Round 2). It was built in partnership with the Belconnen Men's Shed to support community education and disaster preparedness.

This interactive Flood Table provides a three-dimensional visualisation of how floods develop and impact local areas, helping people better understand risks to themselves and others. By building this awareness, it encourages individuals and families to anticipate flooding, make informed decisions, and take practical steps to protect their homes, assets, and livelihoods.

This table will be used by the ACTSES to help educate the community on flood safety.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Dr Marisa Paterson welcomed the partnership between the two organisations to help strengthen disaster resilience.

"This project highlights the strength of local collaboration, bringing together ACT SES operational expertise with the craftsmanship and community spirit of the Belconnen Men's Shed. Together, they have created a practical and engaging resource that supports problem solving, preparedness and a more resilient ACT community.

"It also demonstrates the opportunities made possible through the Australian Government's Disaster Ready Fund. This is one of many projects the ACT has delivered in recent years, and I look forward to seeing even more initiatives progress."

Quotes attributable to ACTSES Chief Officer, Steve Forbes:

"The Flood Table has been designed by ACTSES to show how floodwaters can develop and move through an area, giving community members a clearer understanding of the risks they may face. The more people understand their local hazards, the better equipped they are to make informed decisions when severe weather occurs.

"This project reflects the dedication of our volunteers and the strong community partnerships that support emergency preparedness across the ACT. We are proud to work alongside the Belconnen Men's Shed to deliver an engaging educational tool that encourages conversations about preparedness and helps build a safer, more resilient community."
