Following a successful first round earlier this year, Council is inviting experienced business owners and leaders to become mentors and support new and emerging businesses across Greater Shepparton. The second round will run from March to May 2027.

Behind every successful business is a journey of challenges, lessons and opportunities. The program gives experienced business owners the chance to share the experience they have gained and help others take their next steps with confidence.

The inaugural program, held from May to July 2026, brought together local mentors and mentees for practical, one-on-one conversations about the realities of running a business.

From navigating business challenges to exploring new opportunities, the program gave mentees access to valuable local knowledge, fresh perspectives and guidance from people who understand what it takes to operate a business. For mentors, it was an opportunity to give back to the local business community, share their experiences and build meaningful connections with other business owners.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Geoff Akers, said the program demonstrates the strength of the region's business community and the value of sharing knowledge.

"Greater Shepparton is home to some incredibly talented and experienced business owners who have worked hard to build their businesses. Imagine the difference that experience could make to someone just starting out or looking to grow," he said.

"Our first round brought local businesses together to share ideas, work through challenges and learn from one another. It showed that sometimes the most valuable advice comes from someone who has been in your shoes.

"Being a mentor is about more than sharing business advice. It's about encouraging someone, helping them see new opportunities and knowing you've played a part in their journey. We encourage local business owners and leaders to put their hands up and help make the next round another success."

Debbie McColl from All Farm Gates, who participated as a mentor in the first round, encouraged other experienced business owners to get involved.

"If you've built a business and learned a few lessons along the way, I'd encourage you to consider becoming a mentor. You don't need to have all the answers. Sometimes sharing your experience and offering a different perspective is enough to help another business owner move forward," she said.

Council is now seeking experienced business owners and leaders who are passionate about supporting local businesses and willing to share their knowledge, insights and real-world experience.

Mentors will commit to three one-hour sessions across the three-month program, with one session held each month from March to May 2027. Sessions are informal, confidential and tailored to the needs of each business, making it a flexible and rewarding way to give back to Greater Shepparton's business community.

Mentor expressions of interest are now open and close at 11.59pm on Friday 27 November 2026.

Local business owners and leaders interested in becoming mentors can learn more, hear from previous program participants and submit an expression of interest from our Busines Mentor Program web page.
