Merry Christmas from South Australia Police 2019

The South Australia Police would like to wish you a Safe Christmas and a Happy New Year.

While many people will be at home enjoying your Christmas feasts, opening presents, spending time with family and friends and eating a mince pie or two, police and other emergency services will be working over the holiday season.

We would like to remind you that police will be out in force working to keep South Australia safe.

To ensure that everyone stays safe this holiday season please help keep your property and the ones you love safe by following these simple tips:

Property Safety

  • Avoid placing gifts under a Christmas tree that is visible form the street. Gifts that are easily seen advertise your purchases to potential thieves.
  • Ensure sheds are locked and secured when storing Christmas gifts, such as bicycles.
  • Do not leave packaging from expensive gifts out for rubbish collections. Break down the packaging and place in your bin.

Beach Safety

  • Don't drink and swim- alcohol impairs your judgement and co-ordination
  • Minimise what valuables you take to the beach and attach your keys to a large chain to reduce the chance of losing them in the sand.
  • If possible, lock valuables in the boot of your car- don't leave items in plain sight.
  • Avoid over-exposure to the sun.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Swim at a patrolled beach and between the red and yellow flags.
  • Never swim alone.
  • Vehicle access is allowed on some South Australia beaches, check with the local council for details and remember to drive slowly and that pedestrians have right of way.

Animal Safety

  • Never leave pets alone in a parked car, especially during a heatwave.
  • Remember to keep an eye on your pets and ensure that they have a shady place to take shelter and that they always have access to water.

Road Safety

  • Pay attention behind the wheel to keep yourself and others safe this Christmas and remember that police will be out in force targeting fatal five offences.

Party Safety

  • Organise safe transport to and from the venue before going out.
  • Stay with your friends and look after each other.
  • Set a drinking limit and stick to it.
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times and of who or what is nearby.
  • Tell someone where you are going, who you are with and what time you will return.
