Message from Minister of Health - National Mental Health Week 4 May

From: Health Canada

May 4-10, 2020

Mental Health Week this year will be different than those in the past. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted and changed our lives. For many Canadians, living through the pandemic has led to heightened anxiety and unease. Some have lost employment, others are trying to balance working from home while parenting all day, and others have seen an increase in their substance use.

Some people have lost important support systems and safe spaces, and I know many people are struggling with being isolated. Flattening the curve and stopping COVID-19 has required Canadians to make sacrifices, like not seeing family or friends. I know how hard it can be to feel disconnected from our loved ones, especially during a time when we want to be together.

Now more than ever, Canadians need mental health and substance use resources and supports that are accessible in new and digital ways.

Our government recently launched a portal dedicated to mental wellness and issues related to substance use. Wellness Together Canada provides free online resources and connects Canadians to peer support workers, social workers, psychologists and other trained professionals for confidential chat sessions or phone calls. It is free, confidential, and available to all Canadians.

This Mental Health Week, think about your own mental health, and check in with the people around you. If you know someone who is struggling, connect them to the Wellness Together portal. Remember to be kind. It's tough for everyone but we will get through this together.

The Honourable Patty Hajdu, P.C., M.P.
