- New bus routes announced to support METRONET Byford Rail Extension
- Almost 500,000 additional bus service kilometres added to network
- Six bus routes to connect the new Byford Station with surrounding suburbs
- Rapidly expanding community of Hilbert to receive first bus services
Bus services in the southeast of Perth are set for a boost, with additional buses and enhanced routes being put in place to support the new METRONET Byford Rail Extension when it opens next month.
Ten additional buses and nearly half a million annual bus service kilometres will be added to the network, with six routes to connect to the new Byford Station.
The enhanced bus network will begin operation on 13 October - the day Byford Station and the outer section of the Armadale Line open to the public.
The new and amended routes include:
- amended route 251 operating between Byford Station and Armadale Station via Wungong;
- amended route 254 and new route 255 operating as circular routes between Byford Station and western Byford;
- new route 256 initially operating as a circular route between Byford and southern Byford;
- new route 259 operating between Byford Station and Mundijong via Whitby; and
- new route 262 operating between Byford Station and Jarrahdale via Whitby and Mundijong.
On top of these new and modified routes there will be significant improvements to existing peak, off-peak and weekend bus frequencies and operating hours for those in Byford, Whitby and Mundijong. Students catching the bus to Armadale Senior High School, Byford Secondary College, Court Grammar School and Salvado Catholic College will also enjoy a boost to capacity.
The reopened Armadale Station's feeder network will also see some changes, with new route 246 to service the growing suburb of Hilbert, while existing routes 244 and 250 will be amended to better serve Haynes and Hilbert. Existing route 249 will also be upgraded with a new weekday off peak service added.
Unveiling of the new bus routes follows community consultation between 26 May to 16 June 2025.
From today, people will be able to start planning their journeys with the new bus routes, timetables and an updated JourneyPlanner available on the Transperth website.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"METRONET is more than just tracks and trains - it's about creating an integrated, efficient public transport network.
"The opening of the Byford Rail Extension will see ten additional buses and almost 500,000 extra bus kilometres added to our network, making public transport more accessible for locals.
"I encourage the community to familiarise themselves with the updated routes and plan their journey before they begin on 13 October.
"This project is part of our government's commitment to delivering quality infrastructure and services across our state to improve the lives of all Western Australians."
As stated by Armadale MLA Dr Tony Buti:
"The METRONET Byford Rail Extension is a game changer for our community, and the enhanced bus networks announced today will only support more people using these incredible new stations.
"I know there is a lot of anticipation in the community, and in less than a month, people will be able to use the incredible new Armadale Station for the first time."
As stated by Darling Range MLA Hugh Jones:
"Today's announcement is another fantastic outcome for people living in the communities of Byford, Mundijong and Jarrahdale.
"Not only is our government delivering Byford's first METRONET train station - we're delivering a big uplift to the bus network to make sure people can get around our community and connect to the train line when it opens."
As stated by Oakford MLA Yaz Mubarakai:
"Today's announcement of a new bus network is a fantastic outcome for the people of Hilbert in the fast-growing southeast corridor of Perth.
"This will provide our community with greater access to more affordable and reliable public transport with more buses, increased frequency, and wider coverage.
"I'm particularly delighted for the people of Hilbert, who will be receiving a new bus service for the first time."
