The University of Notre Dame Australia proudly celebrated the official opening of its new library on the Fremantle Campus today, marking a significant milestone in the University's commitment to academic excellence and student success.
In recognition of a transformational philanthropic gift from the Wright family – the largest in the University's history – the new library has been named the Michael JM Wright Library.
This honour pays tribute to Michael JM Wright, a respected Western Australian businessman, philanthropist and former Governor of the University, whose enduring legacy reflects leadership, generosity and vision.
The opening ceremony was hosted by the University's Chancellor, the Honourable Christopher Ellison and Vice Chancellor, Professor Francis Campbell, and was attended by members of the Wright family.
"This gift will have a profound and lasting impact on our students and researchers," said Professor Campbell. "The Michael JM Wright Library is more than a building, it is a hub of learning, collaboration and innovation that will empower generations to come."
"Our family is honoured to support the University of Notre Dame Australia and to see our father's name associated with a space dedicated to learning and discovery," said Alexandra Burt and Leonie Baldock. "Education was something Dad valued deeply and we hope this library will inspire students to pursue knowledge, think creatively and make a positive impact on the world."
The Michael JM Wright Library represents a new era for Notre Dame's Fremantle Campus. Designed as a vibrant, contemporary space, the new library offers state-of-the-art facilities, extensive digital resources and advanced research infrastructure among other key features.
Beyond resources, the library will host programs and activities that foster interdisciplinary collaboration, preparing students for the interconnected challenges of the modern world.
Michael Wright's life was marked by quiet generosity and a steadfast commitment to building a better future for others. His contributions to education, healthcare and the arts reflect values that align closely with Notre Dame's mission. As a member of the University's Board of Governors from 1996 to 2006, Mr Wright played a vital role in guiding Notre Dame through its formative years.
The renaming of the library in his honour is a fitting tribute to his belief in the transformative power of education and his love of learning.
