Michael Wood is a Historian, Broadcaster and the Author of many highly praised books including In Search of the Dark Ages, Domesday, and In Search of Shakespeare.
He has made over 120 documentary films, among them In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great, Conquistadors and The Story of India - each of which was accompanied by a bestselling book. His Story of England, the tale of one village through history, was praised by the Independent as 'the most innovative TV history series ever.'
Michael was born in Manchester and educated at Manchester Grammar School and Oriel College Oxford, where he did post-graduate research in Anglo-Saxon history, on which he has written many academic articles. He is professor of Public History at the University of Manchester and recently received the British Academy's President's Medal for outreach in history.
This role is not remunerated. This extension has been made in accordance with the Cabinet Office's Governance Code on Public Appointments. The process is regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The Government's Governance Code requires that any significant political activity undertaken by an appointee in the last five years is declared. This is defined as including holding office, public speaking, making a recordable donation or candidature for election. Michael has made no such declarations.
