An additional 60 beds and three surgical theatres will be available to public patients at St John of God Midland Public Hospital from this week.
St John of God Health Care opened its new 123 bed standalone private hospital in Midland today.
The beds that were being used by private medical and surgical patients at the existing co-located St John of God Midland Hospital site will now become public beds.
The additional beds and theatres will increase hospital capacity for the eastern suburbs as the health system works through the increased demands during winter - and into the future.
The opening of the new standalone St John of God Midland private hospital coincides with the transition of the St John of God Mount Lawley campus into public hands.
Next week, the 196-bed hospital will be known as Mount Lawley Hospital and be operated by the East Metropolitan Health Service.
As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:
"It's a particularly exciting week for our State's health system.
"In the space of seven days we are welcoming Mount Lawley Hospital into public hands, transitioning 60 beds and three theatres into the public system at Midland, and opening a brand-new facility for private patients.
"That's a significant capacity injection, ensuring Western Australians can access the health care they need, when they need it."
As stated by Midland MLA Steve Catania:
"This is another important step forward for access to health care in Midland, building on the return of 60 beds to public hands through this transition.
"This new private hospital is a beautiful facility, and I'd like to congratulate St John of God Health Care on today's opening.
"With the Workshops precinct transforming around the new station, this hospital will become another key anchor for jobs and investment, supporting the next chapter of our community's growth."
