Today, the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed His Excellency Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, to Canada, to advance pragmatic engagement as part of ongoing efforts to recalibrate bilateral relations.
During a bilateral meeting, both ministers reiterated the importance of maintaining stable and reliable channels of communication at all levels to deepen cooperation and remove irritants where possible. The ministers discussed a wide range of topics in a frank and constructive manner, including consular issues, foreign interference, forced labour and human rights.
The ministers discussed the progress made and ongoing efforts to implement the seven areas of cooperation in the updated Canada-China Strategic Partnership since Prime Minister Carney's visit to China in January 2026:
- The ministers committed to regularizing annual foreign ministers' meetings as part of a new high-level Diplomatic and Strategic Dialogue and welcomed the resumption of the Political and Security Consultation mechanism between their ministries to discuss diplomatic, political, and sensitive bilateral issues.
- The ministers welcomed the reestablishment of the National Security and Rule of Law Dialogue to discuss issues of mutual interest, identify areas of cooperation and address respective concerns, ensuring national security matters are properly addressed within a dedicated forum.
- The ministers acknowledged the ongoing dialogue between law enforcement authorities to advance cooperation where interests converge, including on counternarcotics and via the Law Enforcement Working Group meeting to be held in Beijing from June 8-12.
- The ministers acknowledged progress made on trade relations, notably as Canada has accepted China's invitation to be a country of honour at the 9th China International Import Expo to be held in Shanghai in early November. They welcomed the recent incremental increase in weekly passenger and all-cargo flights between the two countries, consistent with the Canada-China Economic and Trade Cooperation Roadmap and in support of deeper people-to-people, trade and investment ties.
- The ministers look forward to the next meeting of the high-level Canada-China Economic and Financial Strategic Dialogue, which will be co-chaired by Canada's Minister of Finance and National Revenue, François-Philippe Champagne, Canada's Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, and Vice Premier of the People's Republic of China, He Lifeng.
- The ministers discussed supporting two-way investment and trade in clean and conventional energy.
- The ministers highlighted the Canada-China Joint Committee on Culture that met on May 25, 2026, to enhance people-to-people ties and cultural exchanges. They welcomed the signing of two new Memoranda of Understanding between the National Gallery and the National Art Museum of China, and Libraries and Archives Canada and the National Library of China. They also welcomed the announcement of a Canadian creative industries trade mission to China in the fall of 2026.
- Both ministers reiterated their commitment to deepen cooperation on environment and climate change. This includes the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the Memorandum of Understanding on Climate Change Cooperation and the Memorandum of Understanding Concerning Environmental Cooperation. The ministers look forward to their countries co-leading the upcoming 10th Ministerial on Climate Action with the European Union, to be held in Brussels in June.
The ministers welcomed Canada and China's constructive engagement at APEC and agreed to remain in close contact ahead of Prime Minister Carney's participation in the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in November in Shenzhen, China.
