Minister Boissonnault Speaks on Official Languages Day

Canadian Heritage

Canada is a mosaic of cultures and languages. Our two official languages play a vital role in our society. We recognize and celebrate the linguistic diversity that is an integral part of our national identity and rich heritage across the country.

We acknowledge the importance of English and French, which are much more than means of communication. They are bridges between communities, vehicles of mutual understanding and symbols of our respect for diversity.

The Official Languages Act, which is 54 years old this year, recognizes the equal status of English and French in all federal institutions. Its purpose is to ensure that the Government of Canada provides services to Canadians in the official language of their choice. As a result of this act, Canada is stronger, more prosperous and more inclusive.

As a Franco-Albertan and Minister of Official Languages, I am proud to step up and work with our partners to implement the modernized Official Languages Act, officially the Act for the Substantive Equality of Canada's Official Languages, and a new Action Plan for Official Languages. These two powerful mechanisms demonstrate our government's overall vision, which will help us achieve substantive equality between English and French, support official language minority communities and promote the development of our linguistic duality and intercultural dialogue.

By celebrating Canada's Official Languages Day, we are reaffirming that our languages are a key part of our Canadian identity. Together, let's continue to build a Canada where official languages are respected and celebrated and where bilingualism is a source of pride every day.

Happy Official Languages Day!
