The Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, the Honourable Steven MacKinnon, today issued the following statement:
"Today, Canada marks the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) World Maritime Day. This year's theme, 'From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,' is a call to countries around the world to turn shared ambition into concrete results. That means continuing to work with our international partners to achieve safer voyages, cleaner shipping, stronger supply chains, and better outcomes for people, communities, and the environment.
"We are a maritime nation. With more coastline than any other country, our ports and waterways connect Canadians to each other and the world. Marine transportation is essential to our daily lives. It carries the goods Canadians rely on, supports communities and good jobs, and brings what we make, mine, grow, and harvest to customers around the globe.
"That is why we're investing billions to diversify our trade corridors, strengthen our infrastructure, and expand the capacity of our ports. From the new container terminal at Contrecœur, to investments that strengthen the Port of Vancouver and expand export capacity at Prince Rupert, we are building the connections Canadian businesses need to reach more global markets. These investments will solidify the connections that move Canadian products efficiently abroad, reinforce our sovereignty, and support long-term prosperity.
"Tonight, Canada will join the IMO and many of our international partners in lighting up landmarks in blue in honour of World Maritime Day. From the CN Tower at home to our High Commission in London, UK, this gesture signifies our gratitude for the tireless efforts of Canada's maritime workforce.
