The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, made the following statement:
"Today, we mark the start of Sikh Heritage Month across the country.
For nearly 120 years, Sikh Canadians have made a significant contribution to the socioeconomic, political and cultural fabric of our society. April provides an opportunity to highlight these achievements and the many ways in which Sikh communities have helped shape Canada.
Since the first Sikhs arrived in Canada in the early 20th century, the community has continued to make Canada a richer, more inclusive society. Their long-standing tradition of seva-selfless service-is reflected in community initiatives that strengthen solidarity and compassion across Canada. Rooted in core Sikhism teachings-equality, humility, generosity and compassion-these values are also celebrated during Vaisakhi, observed this year on April 14, which commemorates the founding of the Khalsa, the first community of initiated Sikhs. We wish Sikh communities in Canada a joyful Vaisakhi as they honour these enduring principles, along with the teachings of the Gurus and the Holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
As we celebrate the vibrancy and richness of the Sikh culture, which is over five centuries old, we recognize that racism and discrimination remain a reality for the community and for too many racialized people in Canada. We are committed to ensuring that everyone in Canada can freely and safely express its faith. We condemn all acts, words, and forms of violence targeting individuals because of their religion or cultural practices. We have taken important steps to combat racism and hate in the country, through the Action Plan on Combatting Hate, upcoming enhancements to the Canada Community Security Program, the Anti-Racism Strategy as well as the creation of a new Advisory Council on Rights, Equality and Inclusion, grounded in our shared values.
This month and throughout the year, I invite everyone to discover and celebrate the wonderful culture and history of Canada's Sikh community.
Happy Sikh Heritage Month!"
