Minister pushes for needs-based domestic violence funding

NT Government

Today the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence is in Adelaide to continue the Territory Labor Government's fight for needs-based domestic violence funding.

The nature and extent of domestic violence here in the Territory continues to have devastating impacts on our women, children and communities.

The Minister is with Federal, State and Territory counterparts at the National Women and Women's Safety meeting where she will continue her advocacy on the complex issues we face here in the Territory and the urgency of needs-based domestic violence funding.

The funding for curbing domestic violence cannot be resolved by a 'one-size fits all' response. Funding must be allocated on a needs basis.

The funding model must recognise those jurisdictions that face additional impacts that aggravate the severity and frequency of domestic violence.

The Territory has a unique set of complex circumstances that negatively impact on service delivery to victims and perpetrators, including demographic and cultural issues that are further compounded by geographical isolation and access to resources and assistance.

Quotes from Minister for the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Kate Worden

"It has been an extremely heart breaking and tragic week here in the Territory with the senseless deaths of two women and a child in two alleged domestic violence incidents.

"On what would usually be national stories, we have seen minimal coverage - and tragically this a story we know far too well here in the Territory.

"For over two years the Territory Government has advocated for needs-based domestic violence funding to help tackle this issue.

"This will give us the best chance at making a real change for the lives of so many women and children.

"The nation can no longer turn their backs on the complexities and heartbreaking reality we face here in the Territory."
