Durham Region will enhance active transportation and recreation opportunities through new and improved multi-use paths, trail connections and amenities after an investment of more than $3.3 million from the federal government.
This investment was announced by Jennifer McKelvie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities and Member of Parliament for Ajax; John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for the Regional Municipality of Durham, Sterling Lee Deputy Mayor and Regional Councillor Ward 2 for the Town of Ajax and John Mackenzie, CEO of Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.
The Crestpoint Lands (the former Annandale lands) - Trans Canada Trail project will build approximately 1.5 kilometres of multi-use path in Ajax, along with improved seating and landscaping. The project will improve connections with Ajax, providing a more accessible and enjoyable experience for all pathway users.
The Durham Meadoway is a planned 30-kilometre active transportation corridor and linear park connecting neighbourhoods from the Toronto-Pickering boundary to Harmony Road in Oshawa. This funding will support the Preliminary Design Study, helping move the project from vision to reality, and will fund traffic signal upgrades at five Regional intersections to improve safety and connectivity along the route.
In Oshawa, a new multi-use path is planned along Townline Road N between Beatrice Street East and Taunton Road East. The almost one-kilometre pedestrian pathway will provide residents with an additional active transportation option and improve connectivity for communities in the surrounding area.
Together, these three projects represent an important step toward creating a more connected region, making it easier for residents to walk, cycle and enjoy the outdoors. By investing in active transportation, we are helping build safer, more connected communities and creating more opportunities for people to get where they need to go.
