Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island - Students from coast to coast to coast are passionate about protecting our oceans, lakes and waterways and ensuring that there are good jobs for their future.
Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson visited the University of Prince Edward Island campus in Charlottetown with Parliamentary Secretary the Honourable Sean Casey. As a part of the visit, the Minister and Parliamentary Secretary hosted an interactive discussion with students on Canada's plans for protecting our oceans. The conversation focused on how the government is fighting climate change, studying its impacts and adapting to changes in our environment. They also spoke of the importance of science and innovation in tackling our oceans' biggest threats, such as plastic pollution.
The Minister and Parliamentary Secretary also highlighted the significant role played by the University of Prince Edward Island's Atlantic Veterinary College and its partners in dealing with North Atlantic Right Whales. The College, along with the Marine Animal Response Society and the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative's Atlantic region, played a key role in informing the Government of Canada's decisions on measures to protect these whales following the devastating summer of 2017.
