Minns Labor Unveils New Barangaroo Landmark

NSW Gov

The Pavilion provides a unique public space where individuals can gather, relax and engage with architecture, design and everchanging views to Sydney Harbour.

Funded through developer contributions, the project underscores Barangaroo's commitment to accessibility, design excellence, and extensive public domain - with more than half of the precinct available for community use.

The Minns Labor Government remains dedicated to creating accessible public spaces like Pier Pavilion, where the community can gather, celebrate, and engage with the beauty of Sydney Harbour.

Design highlights

  • Innovative structure: Standing over 7-meters high, the triangular Pavilion features curved sides, 85 structural steel columns, 17 unique trusses and 20,000+ fixing components. Its lantern-like design radiates light at night, creating a striking landmark on Sydney Harbour.
  • Oyster terrazzo cladding: Locally crafted, the Pavilion's cladding uses over 450,000 recycled Sydney rock oyster shells, sourced from Sydney's East Coast. Combined with Australian marble chip, sand and cement, this custom terrazzo reflects the precinct's cultural and maritime heritage.
  • Green roof: The Pavilion's 407-metre squared landscaped roof features nearly 2,500 native, drought-tolerant plants, specially chosen to thrive in the harbourside environment. It provides habitat for wildlife and incorporates sandstone boulders, hollow logs and a remotely monitored irrigation system.
  • Natural light integration: A 7-metre diameter oculus in the roof allows natural light to flood the space, creating a seamless connection with the sky above.
  • The 'Cella': A small internal structure within the Pavilion houses a servery and storage facilities to support community events and gatherings.
  • Seating and relaxation: An 18-metre double-sided permanent seating area offers space for visitors to enjoy the breathtaking views and tranquil surroundings.

The project was delivered by Stephen Edwards Constructions over a period of 13 months and designed by architects Besley & Spresser who were selected following a national design competition, the Pavilion captures the harmony between land, sea and sky through its striking formal and material composition.
